Kidderminster Branch Research Projects
The Kidderminster Branch currently operates a research project at Bodenham Arboretum, Wolverley, Worcestershire. In 2002 the Binnian family invited the West Midland Bird Club to use their estate to carry out a breeding bird study and conservation programme that would enhance the quality of the site in making it attractive to a wide variety of bird species. The aims of this project include - a full monitoring of all breeding birds - to establish a supplementary year round feeding programme - to record any noteable changes in breeding success rate in connection to the feeding programme - to make available all data accumulated as a result of these studies. The monitoring group currently submitts records from 60 nest boxes and c40 open nests to the BTO Nest Records Scheme. In 2008 an education programme for children between the ages of 5 and 10 years from local junior schools was introduced into the study. This programme - Bodenham Arboretum 'The Lives of Birds' is carried out in support of the BTO Garden Bird Watch study and the RSPB Garden Bird Watch Weekend event. A number of sessions are held (depending upon school involement) which are designed to encourage young children to gain an interest in birds and other wildlife in general. The programme runs from mid January through to and including April. The study concentrates on:- Identification - Winter bird feeding - Habitat - Breeding Birds - Climate change and its possible effects on wildlife - Bird migration.
